Cultivating Community: The Plaza Garden Club in Shepherd Park Plaza
For over 40 years, the Plaza Garden Club has been at the heart of Shepherd Park Plaza—nurturing a love of gardening, strengthening community connections, and supporting local initiatives. What began as a neighborhood gathering has grown into a dynamic group of residents dedicated to beautifying our surroundings and deepening friendships along the way.
The club meets monthly from September through May on the second Monday evening at 6:45 PM. Each meeting offers a mix of fun and purpose: expect light bites and desserts, engaging programs (think guest speakers, hands-on activities, and garden demos), and time to connect with fellow members. December’s meeting is replaced by a festive holiday party—a beloved tradition.
Beyond the meetings, Plaza Garden Club members are active stewards of our neighborhood. Their civic projects include maintaining the Memorial Beds in Shepherd Park, helping with garden activities at Durham Elementary, caring for the Garden Oaks/Shepherd Park Plaza Community Garden on Alba, and supporting the upkeep of Ann’s Labyrinth.
To fund these efforts, the club hosts two standout events: a biennial backyard garden tour featuring local homes and hidden gems, and an annual plant sale—both favorites among residents and visitors alike.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just getting started, the Plaza Garden Club is a welcoming way to dig into your community—literally and figuratively. Interested in joining or supporting the club’s efforts? Reach out or stop by a meeting—you’ll feel right at home.
